Snowdrops in January
Mine haven't come up yet but few leaf tips are just barely poking through the earth. I usually don't get them until February because they don't get any direct sun where they are planted at my house. I photographed these this morning at my friend's house. Snowdrops are always the first sign of spring.
Garden Passage

Geranium Leaves Backlit by Snow Reflection
All of the leaves have turned to face the window. I love the backs of my geranium leaves just as much as the fronts. I have one that is blooming on the third floor. I think the ones in my living room are intimidated by the paperwhites. You really can't blame them either, can you?
Another Paperwhite Portrait
I have two stems of fully opened blossoms and they are nice and upright like soldiers standing at attention. I am so happy they aren't drooping and don't need staking.

Narcissus papyraceus
I snapped this photo with my iPhone last night just before I tucked myself in to watch the first episode of Downton Abbey Season 2 on PBS last night. I was listening to NPR yesterday afternoon and they kept reminding everyone to watch DownTown Abbey. Whatever you want to call it you should definitely try to catch this 2-hour episode or watch it online before next Sunday.
I bought 15 paperwhite bulbs and started them the week before Christmas and only two are in bloom. One is in a bulb-forcing vase and the other is in soil. The one that is blooming in the clay pot with soil has another bulb beside it that has barely started to grow. I guess they have their own internal clocks. At this rate, I might have blooms in the house all the way up until Easter. This would be fine with me because they are very strongly scented. If they were all blooming at once you could easily fall over from perfume shock upon entering the room. How does your indoor garden grow?

Another Narcissus In Progress
I have bulb forcing vases all over the place in my cottage. I always look for them in thrift shops and at tag sales. This bulb is really reaching for the ceiling and the flowers should start popping out any day now.

Forcing Narcissus Bulbs
I started forcing my narcissus bulbs way before Christmas and they are just starting to come to life. It must have something to do with my thermostat setting which is pretty low. That's fine with me because they last much longer in a cool environment.
This arrangement is right beside "my seat" on the sofa. I hope you like my first iPhone photo of the new year.

Frosty Morning iPhone Pics at My Cottage
It is finally frigid here at the cottage. I ran outside in my bathrobe in my sock feet and quickly snapped some frosty images with my trusty iPhone. As you know from my previous posts, it has been unseasonably warm here...thus the little yellow buttercup.
The birdbath is frozen solid. This photo is my favorite.
Even weeds look beautiful under the cover of a morning frost.
Lamb's ears are fun to photograph with or without frost. I love their fuzzy leaves.

Birdbath Reflection
I didn't have any time today to play with my camera. I got my haircut before lunch and when I got home there was a message that my worker would be dropped off to trim weeds with a metal blade. I was glad but not really prepared to work outside until late afternoon. My chin-length bob and I changed into work clothes and bit the bullet. I was excited about cleaning out the area with my trench for the rain water. We worked from 1:00-4:15 without stopping. I was in charge of the rake. It looks so good and I am glad I worked along with the hired hand. I think you always get a better job if you work as hard as they do. And I firmly believe they worker harder if they see you aren't afraid to get your hands dirty.
I took the iPhone photo of the birdbath yesterday. Tomorrow I'll pick up my trail of leaves after I take a picture to show you. Have a great weekend.

A Winter Garden
This beautiful photo sort of jolted me into making a list of all the winter-related tasks I need to do today before the weekend is over.
- Drain hoses and store them in garage.
- Turn off water supply to outside faucets and drain them.
- Spread more wood chips before pile freezes.
- Buy some paperwhites to force.
- Bring in more firewood.
The first two items are the most important. Have a great weekend and I'll see you later.
Bluebird on Watering Can
I adore this photo. I always look for old watering cans and they are all but impossible to find these days. Don't forget to bring yours inside for the winter or they will fill up with water and freeze which almost always results in a leak. I learned this the hard way. You know I love bluebirds too. Geraniums in Bloom
I brought all of my geraniums in on time this year before the frost got them. Last year I almost lost everything due to laziness in bringing them indoors to winter over. I've heard having house plants improves the air quality of a home and I know they improve the quality of one's spirit. This photo was edited with Picasa; all of the the color was removed except for the center of one blossom.

Mums Mean Fall is Here
Have you planted your mums yet? They look nice along with pumpkins and bales of hay when October rolls around. Pretty soon we can forget about gardening altogether and nest inside by the fire. Can't wait! Enjoy the long Columbus Day weekend. via
