A Breath Of Spring

We really have not had a proper winter. There have been a few cold days, but for the most part it has been quite mild.

Yesterday, our groundhog Beauregard Lee did not see his shadow and predicted an early spring. Punxsutawny Phil saw his shadow and predicted six more weeks until spring. A divided prediction, a divided country. This has been how our weather has been.

There is definitely a breath of spring in my garden. The daffodils are multiplying along with the hellebore, the snowdrops and the iris.

In my travels I have seen saucer magnolia in bloom, forsythia and quince.

It is actually warmer outside than in my drafty old house! We had someone come to discuss replacement windows last night. We’ve never counted and he shared with us that we have 38 windows. I have never been in favor of changing over, but my husband is looking at the bottom line. Well, now he has come to my side – the cost would be exorbitant. Not worth it.

The old wood windows stay.

I have a lot of work to do indoors and out, but I wanted to take a moment to share this breath of spring where ever you are.

This pile of bricks was part of the brick patio on the west side of our home. Remember, my
Rose Lipped Maidens post? We are still having water problems and Dearest is replacing all
the water lines himself.

The Trillium Motherload

Yesterday we went for a hike in the woods - one of my favourite things to do. The weather was warm and sunny and it was a lovely way to spend Mother's Day afternoon.

The marsh marigolds were just beginning to open,

and there were dog-tooth violets,

and trilliums.

Oh yes, there were trilliums by the hundreds. I missed out on seeing huge expanses of trilliums last year so I was very happy to get to see them this year.

There were the usual white ones,

but also the less common red trilliums,

which can be a little shy,

and we found one white trillium with green in the centre of the leaves.

Not only did we walk and some of us take lots of photos, but we also had to investigate this fort that someone had built,

and win or lose a sword fight,

and play intense games of Pooh sticks (you can see one of the sticks by the arrow coming down the stream to go through the culvert to the marsh on the other side).

Ah yes, all round a great afternoon.

And hubby gave me the most remarkable antique sketch book. Details coming soon.

A Blustery Day in Oakville

With a free afternoon yesterday it seemed like the perfect time to catch up with a girlfriend. We went to Oakville, a quaint historic town on the shore of Lake Ontario, and drove around looking at the beautiful old houses and then went for a walk along the waterfront.

One of the houses had the most magnificent display of scillia. While we were there taking pictures, several other cars also stopped to admire the flowers.

We walked around the historic Erchless Estate (c. 1858), which was the home of Colonel Chisholm who founded Oakville. The house is now a musuem which I really need to visit when it is open as I've never been inside. I love the position of prominence the house has on a hill overlooking the harbour and lake. Can you imagine what a view you would get from the widow's walk up on top.

The gardens were just starting to spring to life and mostly had scillia, a few daffodils, and two brave tulips.

The air was cold and the wind was whipping the water up into a frenzy of splashing, crashing wave action.

The seagulls were enjoying the challenge of staying on the pier,

and I was enjoying the challenge of capturing pictures of waves mid-crash.

The colours were captivating with the gray skies and water, the red lighthouse, and yellow mooring posts on the pier.

The colours have been altered in the picture above using Picnik, an on-line photo-editing programme, but I'm kind of liking the vintage look. What about you - do you prefer the natural colours or the aged look?

Spring Redecorating - Family Room

Garden Themed Mantle

I am a little behind in changing up some decor to reflect a lighter - spring mood.

My family room is in gold, green, red and blue. Not the typical light colors of spring. I wanted to place a painting I had on the mantle - in place of the mirror.
