Oleander is low maintenance but toxic, so should be avoided in gardens with children.

Oleander (Nerium oleander, (pronounced /ˈnɪəriəm ˈoʊliː.ændər/) is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the dogbane family Apocynaceae and is one of the most poisonous plants known. It is the only species currently classified in the genus Nerium. Other names include Adelfa, Alheli Extranjero, Baladre, Espirradeira, Flor de São Jose, Cevadilha (Portuguese), Laurel de jardín, Laurel rosa, Laurier rose, Flourier rose, Olean, Aiwa, Rosa Francesca, Rosa Laurel, and Rose-bay (Inchem 2005), закум [zakum] (Bulgarian), leander (Hungarian), leandru (Romanian), zakum, zakkum, zakhum (Turkish), zaqqum (Arabic); harduf (Hebrew: הרדוף); Kaneru (Sinhalese);arali (Tamil and Malayalam - South Indian languages); kanagillu (Kannada - South Indian language); kaner (in Hindi, and, also, in Punjabi-the language from North Indian state of Punjab); and in Chinese it is known as jia zhu tao (Chinese: 夹竹桃). The ancient city of Volubilis in Morocco took its name from the old Latin name for the flower.

Adenium is a genus of flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae, containing a single species, Adenium obesum, also known as Sabi Star, Kudu or Desert-rose. It is native to tropical and subtropical eastern and southern Africa and Arabia.
It is an evergreen succulent shrub in tropical climates and semi-deciduous to deciduous in colder climates, is also dependent on the subspecies or cultivar. Growing to 1–3 m in height, with pachycaul stems and a stout, swollen basal caudex. The leaves are spirally arranged, clustered toward the tips of the shoots, simple entire, leathery in texture, 5–15 cm long and 1–8 cm broad.

The flowers are tubular, 2–5 cm long, with the outer portion 4–6 cm diameter with five petals, resembling those of other related genera such as Plumeria and Nerium.

Die Wüstenrosen (Adenium) sind eine Pflanzengattung aus der Familie der Hundsgiftgewächse (Apocynaceae). Die auch „Wüstenrose“ genannte Art Adenium obesum findet als Zimmerpflanze für sonnige Fenster Verwendung; oft wird sie dazu auf Oleander aufgepfropft.Die Wüstenrosen sind stammsukkulente fast-immergrüne bis immergrüne Pflanzen; sie wachsen als Sträucher und bilden verdickte Stämme (Caudex) aus. Sie erreichen Wuchshöhen von bis 5 Meter und Stammdurchmesser von bis zu 2 Meter. Wüstenrosen-Arten wachsen langsam und können mehrere hundert Jahre alt werden. Die spiralig angeordneten und gehäuft am Triebende stehenden Laubblätter sind ledrig, ungeteilt und etwa 5 bis 15 Zentimeter lang.
An endständigen Blütenständen sitzen die Blüten. Die zwittrigen, leicht zygomorphen Blüten sind fünfzählig. Die fünf Kronblätter sind röhrig verwachsen, sie sind meist rosa bis rot gefärbt. Es werden Balgfrüchte gebildet. Die Samen haben Flughaare.
