| Canna (or Canna lily, although not a true lily) is a genus of nineteen species of flowering plants. The closest living relations to cannas are the other plant families of the order Zingiberales. Gingers, bananas, marantas, heliconias and strelitzias belong to this family. The name Canna originates from the Celtic word for a cane or reed. Every year I plant Canna lilies for our Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. They prefer feeding on the red flowering cannas only. I tried many times to take pictures of our little visitors until a few days ago I managed to get a few nice shots.  Indisches Blumenrohr (Canna indica)Blumenrohr (Canna) ist die einzige Gattung der Familie der Blumenrohrgewächse (Cannaceae), die zur Ordnung der Ingwerartigen (Zingiberales) innerhalb der Einkeimblättrigen Pflanzen (Monokotyledonen) gehört. Das lateinische Wort canna bedeutet Rohr. Zur Gattung Canna gehören (10 bis) 20 Arten. Die Verbreitung ist rein neotropisch. Einige Arten sind weltweit in den Tropen verwildert. Es wurde viel gekreuzt und so sind viele Sorten entstanden, die als Zierpflanzen für Parks und Gärten verwendet werden. Jedes Jahr pflanze ich diese Canna oder Blumenrohr in grosse Pflanzkübel um die winzigen Rubinkehlkolibri (Archilochus colubris) in unseren Garten zu locken. Sie sind auffallende kleine, farbenprächtige Vögel, die in den östlichen Teilen der USA und Canada anzutreffen sind. Sie bevorzugen die rot - blühenden Pflanzen. Es ist nicht leicht sie zu fotografieren, aber hier habe ich ein paar gute Aufnahmen. |
