Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ is one of the

few ornamental grasses that tolerate part shade gardens.

It is shorter, as tall as it is wide, when fully grown.

Although this ornamental grass, like prairie grasses, can be grown in dry soil, it is a Japanese native with qualities that will add to a landscaped garden.

Voted by the Perennial Plant Association for 2009,

it is a reliable perennial to put on any gardener’s list.
Low Maintenance Aureola
Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ prefers growing in rich acid soils that are moist and well draining. It tolerates morning sun, as well as dryer soils but in hot climates needs part shade. In northern regions more sun is required to maintain the golden color.
This slow growing plant is 18” – 24” tall and wide when full size.

These characteristics make it useful for container gardens or small planting beds.
Because H. ‘Aureola’ requires less frequent dividing and has few insect or disease problems, it is considered a low maintenance plant. The leaves should be cut back in late winter or early spring.
