Never seen before in our garden....
The Grey Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis is a medium-sized northern American perching bird of the mimid family.
It is the only member of New World catbird genus Dumetella.
Like the Black Catbird, it is among the basal lineages of the Mimidae.
Adults are dark gray with a slim, black bill and dark eyes.
They have a long dark tail, dark legs and a dark cap; they are rust-colored underneath their tail.
This species is named for its cat-like call but, like many members of the Mimidae family, it also mimics the songs of other birds, as well as tree frogs and even mimics mechanical sounds that they hear, due to having a syrinx like most birds, and are therefore able to make two sounds at the same time. The alarm call resembles the quiet calls of a male mallard.
Die Katzendrossel (Dumetella carolinensis) ist ein nordamerikanischer Singvogel aus der Familie der Spottdrosseln.
Der Vogel ahmt die Rufe anderer Singvögel nach und hat auch ein “Miauen” als Lautäußerung.
Die Katzendrossel brütet in Kanada in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan und Manitoba; in den USA von Oregon bis nach New Mexico und im Osten bis an die Küste. Sie überwintert im Südosten der USA, in Mexiko entlang der Ostküste und auf karibischen Inseln. Der Vogel lebt in dichten Büschen, an Waldrändern, in Waldlichtungen, auf aufgegebenem Farmland und an Flüssen und meidet Gegenden mit zu vielen Nadelbäumen.
